“Southern Illinois”

Little Egypt Chapter

Membership status and recruiting efforts:  Chapter members are reviewing the list of past and potential members received from the National office.  Our plan is to send a letter followed by a personal phone call to see if there is interested in joining our Chapter.  We had three prospective members call about Chapter activities with one of them joining in April.

Chapter activities and meetings:  We had two meetings this year with a guest speaker at our April meeting.  The University of Illinois Extension Office Director talked about educational programs and information the Extension provides to communities in Southern Illinois. He provided a wealth of information on growing fantastic gardens and taking care of our lawns and finished by taking members’ questions.  Our May meeting will have a speaker from the Marion IL VA center to talk about changes going on at the hospital.

ROTC/JROTC awards presentations planned and held:  Chapter members attended both the Army and Air Force Award Ceremonies at Southern Illinois University on the 23/24 of April and presented the MOAA award and our chapter award of $500.00 savings bonds to two cadets (Army Cadet Michael Giliberto from New Lenox, IL and Air Force Cadet Bryce McGarvie from Elgin, IL)  Both cadets were extremely grateful for the award and bonds. Both cadets were invited to attend a future meeting to update chapter members on their progress towards commissioning. Col Tomczak presented 2nd Lt bars and one year memberships provided by the National MOAA office to 23 graduating seniors of the Army and Air Force ROTC Programs.

Scholarship fund raisers:  Members donated their personal items as well as their time to support our participation in the local "swap meet" at SIU on April 25th. There were 150 booths so we had lots of competition. The $260.00 we raised will pay for one of our ROTC scholarship savings bonds next year.
